Mathias and Hoegh Scholarship Fund: New Name, Longstanding Support

Legacy of friendship extends to a new generation

 In 2006, friends of Bob Mathias, a two-time Olympic decathlon champion and former U.S. congressman, established the Bob Mathias Memorial Scholarship fund with Fresno Regional Foundation (FRF). FRF is pleased to announce that the scholarship fund will now include Mathias’s good friend Bob Hoegh as “The Bob Mathias and Bob Hoegh Tulare Union High School Memorial Scholarship Fund.”

Lifelong best friends, Mathias and Hoegh were a great team since their early years in elementary school to Tulare Union High School and lasting through Stanford University and beyond. Both were exceptional athletes and distinguished themselves as leaders in their work.  Mathias was a U.S. Congressman and director of the U.S. Olympic Training Center. Hoegh was a mentor to many in the Valley and a longtime coach at Modesto Junior College. 

Throughout the years, one thing remained consistent: their friendship. In his book, The Bob Mathias Story, Mathias’s simple and honest acknowledgement, “No one ever had a better friend.” Their bond will be remembered with support to future generations of Tulare Union High School graduates.

About The Fund

Since 2006, the scholarship fund has benefitted 16 students from Tulare Union High School with a total of $21,250.  The fund has received over $105,000 in charitable gifts and has earned $40,000 from investments, making it possible to support future graduates from Tulare Union High School.

Head Counselor Terry Langlie has been helping students at Tulare Union High School for the past two decades. During his tenure, the recession hit families at his school hard as parents lost jobs and incomes stagnated. All the while, costs for higher education continued to climb. In the midst of the downturned economy, the newly renamed Bob Mathis & Bob Hoegh Tulare Union High School Memorial Scholarship Fund has made a difference in the lives of Mr. Langlie’s students.

“This scholarship fund has been impactful for the families and students of Tulare Union High School more so now than any other time in my career,” Langlie said. “The scholarship fund has made a huge impact for some students making it possible for them to afford college.” 

Scholarships provide a jump start for a student’s college education. This fund was created to support senior student athletes, one male and one female, from Tulare Union High School who graduated with high academic achievement, while also participating in athletics and school or community service activities.
