Mariposa County

Mariposa County, one of the original counties in California, once covered one-fifth of the state's land area. The county now encompasses 1,463 square miles, including the central portion of Yosemite National Park, which covers the county's eastern half. Mariposa County is located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range.

With its diverse natural attractions and rich cultural history, retirement and tourism are important industries in the Mariposa County economy. Small business, light manufacturing and home enterprises also play a role in the economic health of the county. Mariposa County has a population of 17,130 people, 14.8 percent of whom live below the poverty line (2000 U.S. Census).
